Franchise ownership allows ambitious people to start businesses independently with the support of a franchisor’s proven brand and system. It’s no surprise that veterans are among the most qualified, driven, and successful entrepreneurial candidates, comprising 15% of franchise owners.
Wayne Terry, a PuroClean Franchise Owner since 2007, served eight years in the U.S. Navy and spent several years as a purchasing manager. He shared his motivation behind joining PuroClean, his experience as a Franchise Owner, and his advice for entrepreneurs searching for Servant Leadership:
Joining the PuroClean Network
Wayne’s interest in the restoration industry stemmed from an experience in 1996 when his Jacksonville, Florida home flooded because of a copper piping issue. The company that responded to the incident didn’t meet his expectations.
“They set up all this loud equipment, made my home hot, didn’t tell me how long this equipment would be in place, didn’t tell me what to expect, and at the end handed me a $2,700 bill for services that I was not expecting. The communication was horrible, and there was no customer service,” Wayne said.
When Wayne decided to start a business, he became interested in PuroClean and the company’s mission of Relentless Customer Service. He was also attracted to the industry’s recession resistance.
“No matter how the economy is, property disasters happen, and insurance companies pay. It is a needed service,” said Wayne.
Doing Business the PuroClean Way
Now claiming 18 years of providing restoration and remediation service, Wayne takes pride in the way his PuroClean team serves customers—exceptionally.
“We ensure our phone is answered 100% of the time. Our goal is to have it answered by the second ring. Every second a customer is on hold seems like an eternity to them if they are going through a difficult situation like a flood, fire, or biohazard emergency. We are big on communication,” he said.
Wayne believes his PuroClean business is successful because his specialists understand the nature of emergencies and the importance of flexibility and compassion.
“It takes fast response and a want to help people in need of your services regardless of the time of day, month, or year. You have to become heroes in times of need,” said Wayne.
Advising PuroClean Franchise Owners
Wayne suggests that PuroClean Franchise Owners attend every event the company has to offer. As one of the nation’s top franchises, there is always something to learn from the World-Class Brand.
“PuroClean conventions bring all of us together to see what new things are going on in the industry,” Wayne said. “PuroClean’s flood house has been a great help in getting technicians trained to be lead technicians in the field.”
Many of Wayne’s employees have worked for his franchise for a long time. He encourages their Active Collaboration to get the job done right the first time. Wayne also insists on honesty and brings up the trait in interviews with potential technicians.
“If someone lies to me, my customer or the insurance company – they are fired with no warning. Trust is a big part of this industry, and if you lose the trust, you lose business,” he said.

Wayne affirms veterans make great candidates for PuroClean franchise ownership because they know how to train, work, and be responsible.
